We all carry a sack of rocks - boulders and pebbles of different shapes and sizes. We don't want them. We didn't look for them. They were given to us.
Do you remember when you did not pass the tryout? It is not because you did not try hard. Heaven knows how much you practiced. You thought you were good enough for the team. But the coach did not think so. That's a rock of rejection that you have been carrying all along the years.
We do not have to live long to accumulate a collection of rocks - poor grades, bad choices, make a mess, called a few names, get mocked, or get abused.
It is hard to be thoughtful when you are carrying a heavy burden on your back. It is hard to be affirming when you are affection starved. It is hard to be forgiving when you are burdened with guilt.
There is a correlation between the way you feel about yourself and the way you feel about others. If you are at peace with yourself - if you like yourslef- you will get along with others. The converse is also true. If you do not like yourself - ashamed or embarrased, or angry -other people are going to know it.
The tragic thing about the sack of rock story is that we throw our rocks at those we love.
Hoe does a person get relief?
The answer to the question leads us to one of the kindest verse in the Bible: "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and will find rest for your selves" (Matt. 11: 28-29).
