Blood and water flowed from the side of Christ

"One of the soldiers struck his spear into Jesus' side and water came out" (John 19:34). There is a connection between blood and forgiveness of sins. From Abel, worshipers knew that "without blood there is no forgiveness"  (Heb. 9:22). Abel offered sacrifice to God, becoming the first man to do what millions later would imitate.

What Abel sought to accomplish in the field, Christ completed on the Cross. The Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross completed the ancient sacrificial system.

Christ is the high priest of the new sacrificial system. Christ, once for all,  took blood into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled on the mercy seat, so to speak. But it was not blood of goats, but His own blood.

Christ became the Lamb of God, and the Cross became the altar and we are made holy through the sacrifice Christ made in His Body once and for all time. (Heb. 10:10).  On the Cross, what needed to be paid was paid - what needed to be done was done.

Blood and water flowed from the side of Christ. Do you remember what Jesus  said to the Samaritan woman at the well? "The water I give you will become a spring of water gushing up inside that person, giveing eternal life" (John 4:14).

On the Cross Jesus offered us not a singular drink of water but a perpetual artesian well; with a hole not being in our back yards, but the Holy Spirit in our hearts.

Water is the symbol of the Spirit of God working in our lives. This type of work is not for our salvation, but for our sanctification.  His saving work has been already done at the Cross.

Salvation is the outcome of the shedding of Christ's Blood. As a result of Christ atoning death on the Cross, we receive the ability to obey God and to avoid the things that displease Him, like love our brothers and sisters, not cheat on your taxes, not cheat on your spouse, do your best to love the unlovable.  Do we do these things to be saved? No. All these are good things are fruits of being saved.
