Have you ever thought why Christ lived on earth as long as He did? His life could have been shorter. He could just have stepped into the world long enough to die for our sins and leave. Why did He have to live for 33 years?
To take away our sins is one thing. But to live for 33 years with all the consequences of our fallen world is another.
Could it be that He live that long so that we could develop our trust in Him? Even his final act of earth was intended to win our trust.
In His final act of life on earth was a sound of a thirsty Man. He made his appeal to trust Him through his thirst.
His lips were cracked and his mouth was parched like cotton. His throat was so dry that He could not swallow. His voice was so hoarse that He could hardly speak. He was thirsty. The last moisture that touched His lips was twelve hours before during His last supper with His friends in the upper room.
The Scriptures says that God turned desert into pools and and hard rocks into springs. Why did Jesus endured thirst on the Cross? Why did He have to suffer thirst the way He did?
Before He was nailed to the Cross Christ was offered a drink - vinegar mixed with myrrh and gall. Both contain sedative properties which numb the senses.
However, He refused them. He refused to be stupefied by drugs, opting instead, to experience the full force of His sufferings, because He knew, that we too, would feel them.
He knew that we too, would face pain, if not of the body that of the soul - pain too sharp to be dulled by any drug.
Christ knew that we would face thirst - if not thirst for water, thirst for Truth. He understands. Because He understands we can go to Him with all our needs.
Christ was man like us so He understands how we feel.
On the Cross Christ cried out: "I thirst". In effect He is telling us "I am the person whom you can trust".
