I wonder what was his frame of mind when he asked Jesus a question. Was he asking Jesus a question with a bit of pride? Or, was he expecting Jesus to give him a pat on the back? (see Mark 10:17-22).
Jesus said to him: "If you want to enter eternal life, obey the commandments". I don't think this was what he wanted to hear.
"Which ones? " He asked.
Jesus told him which.
"I have done that!" he said.
This is where the young man should have stopped - no harm, no fowl. He should have left and thanked Jesus. But no. He decided to push further.
"What do I lack?" the young man asked.
And this is when Jesus nailed him: "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven. Then, come and follow me!"
You see, on the outside, the young man was doing all the right things. But on the inside, his heart was divided. His possessions and position were competing with God for primacy. He surrenders his outside behavior to God, but his commitment to God was not absolute.
To forsake everything to follow Him unconditionally, is to put our life in His hands.
The young man simply could not surrender every thing to God. He turns his back on Jesus and walked away sad.
