Of all mothers in the world, Mary is the most
perfect. She was “made to order”. No
creature can create his own mother. Only God can and Jesus did. Mary is the
model of all mothers and all the other mothers in the world are only imitations
of Mary’s motherhood.
A painter once painted a portrait of his own mother.
When complemented about the beauty of his work, he answered: “You know how it
is; one tries to make his mother as nice as possible”.
Jesus created His own mother in a particular way. Jesus
thought of her before she was born. He conceived her in His eternal mind before
she was conceived in Saint Ann’s womb. She was conceived eternally in the mind
of God.
It was through her portals as the gate of heaven that
the Savior would enter into the world. As no weeds grew in Eden, so no sin would
arise for Mary is the paradise of the Incarnation. It would be unbecoming for
the sinless Christ to enter into the world through a sinful woman. It would be
like having a barn to serve as an entrance to a castle.
God, in His mercy remits original sin in the
Sacrament of Baptism. It is only natural that God should grant a special privilege
to Mary, in virtue of Christ’s merits, to remit her sin before she was born. This is
what is meant by the Immaculate Conception.
