According to John, he who says that he knows Christ, but does not do what He commands, is a liar and the truth is not in him, (See 1 John 2: 3-4).
A genuine concern for Christ's beloved poor must be demonstrated tangibly by those who claim to follow Him. The love for His beloved poor must be woven into the pattern of the lives and faith of His followers.
In both the Old and the New Testaments we see the thread of God's concern for the poor and the marginalized.
Christ announced His Messianic identity and mission by saying that He came to preach the "Good News" to the poor. (see Matt. 25:18).
Christ's criterion for determining the authenticity of someone's profession to follow Him is whether or not, he or she, tangibly care for those in need.
We are told that when we care for the least and the last, we actually care for HIm. Christ's identity is merged with the least and the last.
